Résumé de la thèse

This thesis investigates the state of gender equality in Switzerland by analysing the evolution of gender attitudes and work-family arrangements among heterosexual couples between 2000 and 2020. Drawing on a novel theoretical framework that integrates gender structure theory and the life course perspective, it examines the relationship between gender attitudes and couples’ work-family arrangements and how this relationship varies across family life stages. Particular attention is given to couples’ adoption of non-normative work-family arrangements, challenging gendered norms and expectations. The findings reveal a gradual shift towards more egalitarian gender attitudes and arrangements in Switzerland. Yet, resistance to maternal employment persists, and most couples maintain a gendered division of labour. Moreover, the analyses highlight a complex relationship between gender attitudes and work-family arrangements, which varies according to the configuration of attitudes within the couple, the type of work (paid or unpaid), and the family life stages. Overall, the results underscore the crucial role of consistent egalitarian attitudes between partners in fostering the adoption of more egalitarian work-family arrangements, and, ultimately, advancing gender equality within the Swiss context.
