Résumé de la thèse

One of the main challenges regarding the integration of refugees in Europe is the future of asylum seekers and refugees arriving at the crossover of young age and adulthood. Despite the general challenges of economic and social integration, young asylum seekers and refugees find themselves at important turning point in their life course: the transition into adulthood. This transition implies educational, professional and family changes combined with the psychological challenges of the life course period (Arnett, 2000). Despite an increasing political and scientific interest in refugee integration little statistical evidences on integrations programs and their outcomes have been published. Two main obstacles explain the lack of systematic research on the influence of integration initiatives: the lack of quality data and the difficulty to compare integration programs

The current thesis will bring up new evidences in the life courses research of young people seeking asylum in Switzerland by using Register Data.Their integration and socio-economic outcome will be shaped by different life course events. The current work identifies some of the main trajectories and turning points: Education, school-to-work transition and family dynamics.

The data allows us to identify between group disparities (e.g. asylum seekers, working migrants, family reunion, refugees or students) as well as differences within the group. By using the data on an individual level we can identify integration trajectories of young refugees (as well as asylum seekers and people with a temporary admission) by focusing on following elements: age at migration, residences (cantonal and regional differences), gender, accessibility of integration programs, asylum procedure, and nationality.

Given the theoretical and methodological background our paper aims at highlighting: (1) the impact of different initiatives of integration on life courses transitions of young asylum seekers and refugees by using the particularity of the Swiss integration system, (2) the research interest in combining and using different sources of administrative data to generate a solid and exhaustive database capable of identifying asylum seekers, provisory admissions and refugees, (3) the opportunities and limits of register data and (4) the communication will give an outlook on further research and data preparation.
